Giovanna Engelbert is an Italian Creative Director, Editor and Fashion Consultant with over 20 years of experience in the fashion industry. Recognized for her uncanny ability to meld sophistication and playfulness, her creative vision has deep roots in the knowledge and love of historical and modern art, music, dance and film. Paired with her unerring contemporary eye, it is an aesthetic that has opened for prestigious and exclusive collaborations and commercial assignments. Today she works with global, luxury brands on their ongoing creative and sustainable transformation of products, imagery, retail, organizations and marketing campaigns. Her client list has included brands such as Carolina Herrera, Dolce & Gabbana, Michael Kors, Christian Dior, Max Mara, Tory Burch, Bottega Veneta, Moncler and Lacoste.
Born and raised in Milan, Giovanna began her fashion career at the age of 17 while studying at art school. She became the Fashion Editor at L’Uomo Vogue with then Editor in Chief Anna Dello Russo. In addition, she has contributed to a stable of Conde Nast’s international publications such as Vogue Paris, Vogue Germany and Vogue China. Giovanna also ran Vogue Gioiello and Vogue Pelle with Franca Sozzani between 2009-2011. In 2012 she became the Senior Fashion Editor at Vogue Japan and a Contributing Editor at W Magazine, for whom she also had a monthly column “Gio’s Journal,” (2011-2017).
In 2013, Giovanna became the Creative Director of the multidisciplinary theatre circus and cabaret show on Broadway, Queen of the Night, which ran from 2013-2016 in the revamped Diamond Horseshoe nightclub at the Paramount Hotel. Giovanna brought Thom Browne to design the costumes of all cast and was overseeing the interior decoration.
Since 2016, Giovanna has been consulting for Swarovski Professional in her capacity as Creative Director. During this time, Giovanna created the ‘Book of Dreams’, which is an inspirational limited-edition coffee table magazine for the fashion and jewelry business and its creative force. Giovanna has, as part of the assignment, orchestrated collaborations with publications such as Cabana and Garage Magazine, overseeing all creative aspects, including the various artist commissions and launch events in Paris, Milan and NYC.
In November 2017 she released Gio_graphy: Fun in Wild World of Fashion, an elegant and colorful autobiography and style guide, published by Rizzoli. A humorous and chic take on travel, fashion and living your most glamorous life. The book pre-launched in September in a collaboration with the New York department store Bergdorf Goodman. For the book launch Giovanna designed unique window displays for the iconic Fifth Avenue store, along with a collection of exclusive t-shirts and a curated pop-up store which also hosted her book signing.
In May 2020 Giovanna’s new role as Global Creative Director at Swarovski Crystal Business was announced. Swarovski Crystal Business is the newly merged version of Swarovski Professional, Swarovski Consumer Goods and Swarovski Atelier. Already having been committed to Swarovski Professional since 2016 by bringing her consistent and compelling point of view to the areas of branding, design and content curation, her role will now oversee all creative aspects of Swarovski Crystal Business including brand image, products, communications, campaigns, stores and events.
